The encaustic medium is magical, vibrant and translucent.  My creative muse guides, inspires and feeds my soul through this medium, mixed media and collage.  Blessing me with endless moments of creative joy and harmony...providing those ahhaa moments about life.  Join me on this creative journey, spend some time reading my musings about this life, the blessed other souls that come into contact with mine, however brief or often, that can leave everlasting imprints on our journey....perhaps our lives might share some similarities, bringing us closer and more connected...and less isolated.

"I suppose there is one friend in the life of each of us who seems not a separate person, however dear and beloved, but an expansion, an interpretation, of one's self, the very meaning of one's soul." ~ Edith Wharton

Here's to finding those expansive moments.....

Mixed Media Artist, Seth Apter will have his second book released in October....I can hardly wait.....

I am excited to announce the upcoming release of Seth Apter's second book in October, Seth is the owner of The Altered Page....My work will be featured in this second book and I am so grateful for the invitation to be part of this fabulous book and to work with a wonderful kind, talented and visionary artist, Seth Apter...

Seth writes: It is with excitement and gratitude that I announce the release of my second book in October 2013: . The Mixed Media Artist.

"There's a secret to understanding the hidden message in a work of mixed-media art. If you can get to know the artist, you will get to know the art. The Mixed Media Artist unlocks this mystery and provides an intimate look into the hearts, souls, and creative processes of over 40 inspiring artists. Surprising self-portraits, innermost self-reflections and practical art-making tutorials are just some of the keys you will find here to unlocking the door to a greater understanding of how and why art is made.

--Helpful how-tos: Throughout each section, artists share favorite tools, secret ingredients and step-by-step processes that go beyond the who to provide the how.

--44 artists share creative perspectives and intimate thoughts. Provocative questions are answered not only in words, but multiple times as art, spotlighting the forces that make the art and the artists what and who they are.

--Compelling poll data: Answers collected from hundreds of individuals reveal statistical insights on the creative community at large.

--Additional online content: Links to downloads, tutorials, videos and more are sprinkled throughout the book.
Just under a month before my new book 'The Mixed Media Artist' is released. Counting down...

The Elora Tarot Project - The opening nite was a huge success

The Queen of Wands, Encaustic Mixed Media, 18 x 30 inches, 2013
Elora Tarot Project

The Wheel of Fortune, Encaustic Mixed Media, 18 x 30 inches, 2013
The Elora Tarot Project

The World, Encaustic Mixed Media, 18 x 30 inches, 2013

The opening of the Elora Tarot Project, Friday September 13th was huge success, over 500 people were in attendance at the opening...it truly was an opening to remember.
The exhibit is on until November 3rd, at the Wellington County Museum and Archives in Aboyne, ON.  It is truly a remarkable project, not to be missed, 78 pieces of art work by 65 artists.

The Elora Project has produced a deck of the exhibit which can be obtained from the website or at the museum.

Shelley Carter asked me to say a few words from an artist's perspective....and so here is what I had to say:

First a big thank you to Shelley for the invitation to be part of this fabulous project.
As an artist it has been a shear pleasure to be involved, as it has been both unique and inspirational.

When I look around the room the magnificent art exhibit, I am awe struck by the diversity of mediums, and the magnitude of what you, Shelley and the artist's have accomplished.
So this is a hat's off to the artists who too worked from their hearts and put in their all.

But it goes without saying that we all would not be here tonight if it wasn't because of Shelley, her VISION, PASSION, DEDICATION, and ABILITY to stand steadfast to her dream with patience and grace ...which has been KEY to the success.

You have mobilized a community of artists and art lovers to participate full heartedly, to get excited and to be inspired by TAROT.
This success is because of you and your warmth and guidance.
Thank you for sharing your passion of tarot with us...

From an artist's perspective to be involved in this project has meant to be involved in something bigger than my own art work.  It has meant to be involved in a community initiative and to enjoy a sense of community spirit.

That community spirit is so strong here in this lovely village. It can be felt in this very room.
Shelley your vision to see a dream to fruition has been a testament to all of us.  To know that dreams can come true.  You have shown us that when you believe in something so passionately, you owe it to the world to make it come true and to deliver.  You have done that, and we are all richer for it.

Finally I believe art informs culture and the significance of which can be lost in our frantic lives, where we are worried about cutbacks and economic struggles.

This project brings to the forefront the importance of how art can inform our lives, bring reflection to our ever changing world.  It has united us or at the very least connected us in dialogue. You have brought that community conversation come alive.
In addition the creation of the deck brings this special community to artists and this part of the world to other parts of the globe.  A big cheers to you Shelley Carter.

Transformations - A two person show at the Jordan Gallery, Opens August 10th 2-4 pm

Transformations, Opens August 10th, 2-4 pm - Encaustic Works by Laura Culic & Supria Karmakar

3836 Main Street, Jordan Village, ON, Canada, L0R 1S0

We are located in the heart of Jordan Village, an established and successful enclave of small but distinctive shops as well as the home of a world class restaurant, winery and inn.

Paddle, 16 x 16

Laura Culic says her " paintings are a response to a deep and abiding love of the natural world – in particular, the wild places of Ontario. Many thoughts run through my head as I paint which influence the direction of my work: thoughts that include geography; natural science; exploration; history; journeying and map making; songs, poems and stories; the Canadian landscape and our relationship to it."

Fresh Water Biology, 24 x 24

Spirit House, 14 x 20 x6

Supria Karmakar, writes that "this series was initially inspired by the small roadside temples that can be found in Thailand; where, these tiny shrines are proudly offered to ancestors, often full of trinkets, incense, flowers and other offerings laid forth with a prayer or message.

In this body of work, Spirit House, I reflect on the concept of home, the spiritual and philosophical notion of home versus the literal manifestation of it, with its walls and belongings. Home can be informed by our ancestral roots and ties that create our sense of self and inform our journey and decisions. The idea of home explored in this work is about my inner journey, my ancestral ties and I contemplate on “what creates meaning and belonging?”. The culminating thought is that home is where we make it and the true sense of home resonates from within us, where we find authenticity, joy, bliss and sometimes even deep darkness and suffering. The key essence being seeking to be ever present in the moment with whatever arises and finding its meaning."

Seventh International Encaustic Conference, Provincetown, MA. USA - Altered Book Talk Sunday June 3rd, 2013

Want to see a glimpse of The Wax Book: Altered, Repurposed, Remade exhibit that took place in 2012 at the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill, Truro, MA.  I will be presenting a talk on Sunday June 2nd, 2013 on the exhibit and highlighting new works by some of the thirteen artists that exhibited at this show last year.    For more information on this great conference, visit here.

Here is an introduction to my talk on Sunday, June 3rd:
The Altered Book, Supria Karmakar
Supria Curated last year’s conference-sponsored exhibition, The Wax Book: Altered, Repurposed, Remade, inspiring the Conference Curatorial Project this year. We invited her to present a slide talk of images from the exhibition and to add images of new work by the same artists—as well as a selection of works from additional artists—for a big look at how artists are integrating wax and the book form.

Check back in a few days and I will upload more images and glimpses of the presentation in different segments.

The original thirteen artists from the WAX BOOK Exhibit, 2012

Here is one example of one artist's page that will be presented:
